STORY
Vornado, a real estate trust company, approached Imaginex to celebrate Crystal City, VA with a large scale art structure. The city, named after a beautiful chandelier display a century ago, now features a new chandelier that displays new animations every day and provides colorful lighting in their outdoor park. Imaginex collaborated closely with the Vornado team to design a chandelier of epic proportions: spanning 25 feet wide and containing 10,8000 individually controllable LED’s.

DESIGN
The design should help tell a story. Working closely with the Vornado team, we drafted multiple versions of how we can celebrate the city’s founding history through a piece of technology-driven art. The Crystal City Chandelier also promotes technology and entrepreneurship: a growing market in the region.
TECHNOLOGY
When existing technology limits creativity, we build new technology. Imaginex engineered a custom system to bring this chandelier to light. Commercial versions of LED-mapping software is rare and limited in features, but research and development allowed us to map over 10,000 LEDs in 3D space, while providing a simple way to play animations.
ANIMATION
We developed over one-hundred generative sequences, so each day brings in completely unique colors and effects. At night, you can change the music in the park through a mobile app, and watch the LED’s on the Crystal City Chandelier play to the music. Special holiday themes were also created such as animated hearts on Valentines day.
INSTALLATION
The Chandelier was unveiled in December of 2015, supported with the help of FK Productions in rigging and structural engineering.
